40. Reflecting on Being SPACE

Hello! Welcome to this sacred space … to this quiet moment …
to our reflective, meditative time together!
I’m Bill Bauman, and I’m deeply honored
to invite us to reflect together now on …
… being space!
Here’s an intriguing question for you:
How often do you think about yourself as a space being,
or a being of space?
I know, it even sounds like an absurd question, doesn’t it?
For reference, though, we often think of ourselves as human beings,
physical beings, rational beings, emotional beings, spiritual beings, etc.
But, have you ever pictured or thought of yourself as a space being—
a being stripped of every ingredient except one: pure, empty space?
Well, let’s do exactly that. Let’s spend our time together today
immersing ourselves in this intangible identity that we all share—
as beings of space ... as space itself!
We know from science, of course, that we all live within three dimensions of space.
In this vision, we perceive ourselves as living within the confines and limits of space
and see ourselves as moving through this space whenever we walk, run or fly.
For most of us, we experience space as a phenomenon outside of or around us,
not inside us, and certainly not as us.
In contrast, today, I’m inviting you to join me in a bigger truth about this space—
the funny-sounding truth that you and I actually are space.
Before I ask you what being space looks or feels like to you, though,
how about if I invite you to experience yourself as this bigger identity,
as a space being!
Yes, I am asking you to shed all your other learned identities—such as
“I’m human,” “I’m a man or woman,” “I’m physical,” “I’m emotional,”
“I’m rational,” “I’m spiritual,” I’m light,” etc.—
until all that is left of you is empty, nondescript space!
Do you now have that picture strongly present in your imagination?
If so, I now ask you how it feels or what it looks like to you.
What is it like to be nothing other than a being of pure space?
As a background for your experience, I’d like to share my own.
As I see it, being space feels like the last stop
as we journey from all our more tangible identities
to the nothingness-filled land of our origin, the quantum void itself.
To describe it from the other direction,
being space is the first of the quantumly generated identities that we experience
on our creative journey toward becoming any and every other identity.
So, it seems only fair that we spend a little time today being space.
I thank you for having the courage to join me in this adventure.
Ahh, space!
If you imagine yourself not as a human being inside space,
but as space itself, what’s the first image or thought that appears?
As a backdrop to support your own impression, I’ll share some of my own.
I’ve experienced pure space, including the space that is me,
often giving me two distinct impressions of itself.
First, from a ‘story of creation’ perspective,
space shows me itself as the equivalent of a silent, permissive mother of creation,
as a willing womb in which galaxies and universes awaken to life,
as a quiet openness that sits at the heart of all imagined creation—
as a mystery-filled vastness that makes room for everything possible
but never becomes anything itself.
For me, to be space in this sense is to be that heartful openness,
to experience that vastness that neither clings to nor rejects anything,
to feel the deepest possible neutrality in relation to everything.
Second, perhaps from a bit more mystical or mythical perspective,
I sometimes experience space as the equivalent of an inaudible breath
that the quantum void takes before exhaling itself into form,
or like the subtle hum of existence before it becomes sound,
or like a sacred pause between absolute void and expressive creation,
or as an unmoving stillness that empowers everything to move.
For you and me, when we are immersed in our identity as beings of space,
we find ourselves sitting at this magical birthplace,
this silent tipping point, this sacred source of all creation.
There, we have no option but to experience an untold sense of wonder and awe,
and even to be wrapped in a state of quiet ecstasy
as we celebrate the miracle of it all from this unique vantage point.
When we’re present to our oft-forgotten nature as beings of space,
you and I naturally accept everything for what it is,
an all-allowing, all-promoting, all-supportive creation—
because that’s exactly what space does.
We welcome and embrace every stye of creation, everywhere—
because that is the permissive, open-ended nature of space.
We live in a state of neutrality, non-judgment and oneness with everything—
because that’s the natural style of pure space.
Earlier, I asked you what it is like for you to be space.
I’m guessing that, by now, you’re clear about what it's like for you.
So, let’s take the next step:
Let yourself ‘let go’ anew, dropping even deeper into your spatial nature.
Consciously become your ‘space self’ even more, right now.
Then, listen anew to what your ‘space self’ is inviting you to.
Perhaps it’s inviting you:
to visit and spend time with that spatial “you” more regularly,
or to look thorough its pure, permissive eyes more frequently,
or to just sit back and enjoy the view through its clear vision,
or even to give yourself the welcome treat of an occasional moment
of sheer ecstasy!
What a magical time we’ve had together today!
Thank you for giving me the privilege of inviting you into your fascinating nature
as space itself,
and of accompanying you as you’ve merged with and become
that magical, neutral, permissive, womb of creation
called space!
As we end our time together today,
may you be ever aware of this primordial nature of your existence—
your space nature—
as you now allow that identity to support and enhance your human experience.
In closing, may your spatial self be ever present
in your awareness and life!
Thank you!
